Building Strong Foundations for the Future
The first five years of a child's life are an extraordinary period of growth and discovery. At Birtle View Day Nursery, we want those early experiences to be filled with opportunities to play, explore, communicate, create, make friends and discover what they are capable of.
Our approach is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which sets the standards for children's learning, development and care from birth to five years old.
Within that framework, we get to know every child as an individual. Their interests, experiences, personality and stage of development all help shape the opportunities we provide, creating learning that is purposeful without losing the magic and enjoyment of childhood.
Learning Through Play
Young children learn best when they are interested, involved and enjoying what they are doing.
That's why play sits at the heart of learning at Birtle View.
A construction activity might introduce early mathematical ideas. Sharing a story develops language and imagination. Water and sand play can encourage investigation and problem-solving, while role play helps children communicate, cooperate and make sense of the world around them.
Our practitioners use children's interests as a starting point, creating experiences that encourage them to investigate ideas, try new things and develop new skills.
Sometimes an adult will introduce an activity or challenge. At other times, the most valuable thing we can do is follow a child's lead and see where their curiosity takes them.
The Seven Areas of Learning
The EYFS identifies seven interconnected areas of learning and development. Three are known as the Prime Areas, which are particularly important in laying the foundations for children's development and future learning.
-
Communication & Language
Children are encouraged to listen, understand, express themselves and develop an increasingly rich vocabulary through conversation, stories, songs, imaginative play and everyday interactions.
-
Personal, Social & Emotional Development
We support children to understand their emotions, develop confidence, form positive relationships and gradually become more independent.
-
Physical Development
From crawling and climbing to running, balancing, drawing and using tools, children have plenty of opportunities to develop both their gross and fine motor skills.
-
Literacy
Stories, books, songs, mark making and conversation help children develop an early love of language, reading and writing.
-
Mathematics
Children encounter numbers, counting, patterns, shapes, sizes, quantities and problem-solving naturally through play and carefully planned experiences.
-
Understanding the World
Children are encouraged to investigate their surroundings, learn about people and communities, explore nature and begin developing an understanding of the wider world.
-
Expressive Arts & Design
Through art, music, movement, imaginative play and working with different materials, children have the freedom to express their ideas and develop their creativity.
How Children Learn
The EYFS isn't simply about what children learn. It also recognises the importance of how they learn.
Children develop through playing and exploring, becoming actively involved in their learning, and beginning to create ideas, make connections and think critically.
At Birtle View, our role is to create an environment where children feel confident enough to investigate, experiment and sometimes get things wrong.
We celebrate the process as much as the result — the determination to complete a puzzle, the excitement of discovering what happens when two materials are mixed, or the pride that comes from finally managing something independently.
These everyday moments help children develop curiosity, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning that can stay with them long after they leave nursery.
Following Your Child's Learning Journey
Every child's journey is different.
Our practitioners get to know the children in their care, observing their interests, recognising their achievements and identifying opportunities to support their next steps.
Observations don't mean interrupting children's play or turning every activity into a formal lesson. Instead, our team uses its knowledge of each child to recognise meaningful moments of learning as they happen.
These insights help us build a picture of your child's development and plan experiences that respond to what interests, motivates and challenges them.
Your Child's Learning Journey
Our learning journey is an ongoing cycle. We observe what children enjoy and can do, consider what this tells us about their development, provide appropriate opportunities and experiences, and then continue to learn more about them as they grow.
This means learning remains responsive rather than following a one-size-fits-all programme.
A Child-Centred Curriculum
Our curriculum is inspired by the children themselves.
By listening to their conversations, noticing what captures their attention and understanding what they already know, our practitioners can build learning opportunities around subjects that genuinely engage them.
A fascination with dinosaurs might lead to counting, creative activities, stories and discussions about the past. Discovering an insect outdoors might prompt questions about nature, habitats, colours and movement.
One interest can open the door to many different areas of learning.
This child-centred approach helps children become active participants in their own development, encouraging curiosity, creativity, communication and problem-solving.
Growing Independence and Confidence
As children move through Birtle View, we gradually encourage them to do more for themselves.
From making simple choices and looking after their belongings to communicating their needs, developing friendships and taking part in everyday routines, these seemingly small achievements build important life skills.
For our preschool children, this naturally develops into preparation for school.
Early maths and literacy form part of this, but school readiness is about much more. We want children to leave Birtle View with the confidence to try, the independence to tackle everyday tasks, the communication skills to express themselves and, importantly, an enthusiasm for learning.
Parents Are Part of the Journey Too
Parents and carers know their children better than anyone, so working together is an important part of our approach.
Sharing information between home and nursery gives us a fuller understanding of your child's interests, experiences, achievements and changing needs.
We use Parent Zone to help families stay connected with nursery life, providing a convenient way to share information about children's experiences and development and giving parents the opportunity to contribute moments from home too.
By keeping communication open between practitioners and families, we can work together to provide children with consistent encouragement and support throughout these important early years.
Where Little Futures Begin
Early education isn't about rushing children towards the next milestone.
It's about giving them secure foundations from which those milestones can naturally grow.
At Birtle View, we aim to create an environment where children feel safe enough to explore, supported enough to try, confident enough to ask questions and excited about discovering something new.
Because the things children learn during their early years go far beyond letters and numbers. They're beginning to learn who they are, how to relate to others and just how much they're capable of.
